What is septage?
Septage is what is inside your septic tank. It includes solids and liquids that come from your toilet, sinks, kitchen and laundry.
Is septage dangerous?
Yes. Sewage from your house and septage from your septic tanks contain pathogens, such as E. coli, that can make you and your family sick. If it overflows or seeps into the groundwater or other bodies of water, it can cause serious health problems in your community and a great deal of damage to every part of the ecosystem.
What is septage management?
It is the program of MCWD, in close partnership with the Local Government Units of Metro Cebu, in the desludging (emptying) of septic tanks (every 5 years), transporting and the proper treatment and disposal of the by-products of wastewater (effluent) and biosolids (sludge) taken out from those septic tanks so these can be disposed of without causing any harm to the environment.
MCWD has the only septage treatment operations fully compliant with the Sanitation Code of the Philippines. Its treatment plant, located in Cordova, is state-of-the-art and is the only facility in Cebu capable of properly treating and disposing of septic tank waste.
What should I get from supporting the MCWD Septage Management Program?
Regular desludging, cleaning and the proper maintenance of septic tanks help prevent the contamination of water sources and the health risks it brings.
Why do we need septage management?
Septage is not only smelly. It can also contaminate water sources and spread water-borne diseases. You can take care of your septic tanks by having it drained and cleaned by a duly accredited service provider. Septage must be treated properly prior to disposal to avoid serious environmental and health hazards to you, your community and the environment.
Is it required by law?
Yes. The Clean Water Act of 2004 requires all local government units to implement septage management program in areas without piped sewerage systems. Local ordinances of the Municipality of Cordova and Lapu-Lapu City provide for the mandatory desludging of septic tanks every five (5) years.
Who will provide the desludging services?
Envirokonsult, Inc., a licensed private company, is contracted by MCWD to do the desludging services. The said company has accreditations with the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
How can I avail of the desludging services?
MCWD will inform your barangay of the schedule of desludging in your area. We will also post the schedule on our Facebook page. Please make sure that someone is in the household during the scheduled time and date the desludging trucks will be in your area.
How much will this service cost me?
An MCWD consumer will pay only ₱2.20 per cubic meter of water consumed. This means that on the average, a family will pay ₱50.00 every month on top your monthly water bill or a total of ₱3,200.00 for every five years.
