DUE to the low water supply in some parts of Cebu City, some residents of at least nine barangays are now dependent on the water delivered to the villages by the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) and the City Government, which started over the weekend.

Joel Biton, Department of Public Services (DPS) head, said eight water tankers of MCWD and City Hall delivered water to the affected barangays. Small tankers from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) were also deployed.

MCWD spokesperson Charmaine Kara said they are focusing on Barangays Sambag 1, Sambag 2, Cogon Ramos and Sta. Cruz, the four villages hit hardest by the low water supply. Water rationing in these barangays started on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

As for the DPS’ own water rationing, the priority areas are Barangays Carreta, Day-as, Lahug (Salinas Drive and Kamagong), Lorega San Miguel and Mabolo.

From 238,000 cubic meters of water supplied by MCWD in its franchise area each day, it is now able to supply only 215,000 cubic meters a day due to the soaring temperature, which caused surface water sources to dry up.

Because of the drop in the daily production, some parts of MCWD’s franchise area are experiencing fewer service hours and low water supply.

Earlier, the MCWD reported a drop of 20,000 cubic meters in its production due to the lower delivery from its private supplier in Consolacion because of saltwater intrusion and the effects of the dry spell on the supply from Carmen.

The low production from these sources affected consumers in Liloan, Consolacion, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova and parts of Cebu City like Mabolo, Carreta, T. Padilla, Tejero and Lorega San Miguel.

Production at the Jaclupan Facility also dropped by 10,000 cubic meters per day, affecting some parts of Talisay City and Cebu City.

To help meet the demand, Kara earlier said that they have requested Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. to increase the volume of water it supplies to MCWD from its brackish water treatment facility by at least 5,000 cubic meters per day.

Kara and Biton urged other residents who might be suffering from water shortage to coordinate with their barangay captain so water could be delivered to their villages. (FROM PAC OF SUPERBALITA CEBU / LRC)
