Six days after Typhoon Odette hit Cebu, more than 46% of water supply from the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) is already restored.

Last night, six wells in Banilad-Talamban area were energized by the Visayan Electric Co. (VECO)while two are being run by generator sets with a total production of 18,300 cubic meters. This means that around 21,000 households in Talamban, Banilad, portion of Lahug and Apas and parts of CentralCebu City already have water supply. Another two wells in the area that can produce up to 10,000 cubicmeters of water per day will also be operational soon.

The restoration of the Talamban well fields brings the total water production of the water

district to 111,300 cubic meters since restoration efforts started. Normal daily production of MCWD is 240,000 cubic meters per day. Three days after the typhoon, MCWD was able to restore 31 percent of the water supply using generator sets and the production increased to 36 percent on the fourth day. The water district continues to find ways in order to further increase its daily water production. Generator sets installed to wells that are already VECO-energized are transferred to other wells that do not have power yet.

MCWD is also giving water to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for distribution to residents in the northern part of its franchise area. BFP’s fire trucks will extract water from the water district’s hydrants to be distributed to the residents in Compostela, Liloan and Consolacion. This was agreed during the meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, MCWD, BFP, VECO and Mayor Michael Rama at the Capitol yesterday. MCWD restores 46% of water supply.
